Science behind immersion in hot water and better sleep

Immersing the human body in warm water raises core body temperature. A soak in a Wellis hot tub raises your core body temperature and the following cool-down period immediately afterward relaxes the body and emulates what happens naturally during sleep.

 

“Your temperature naturally dips at night, starting two hours before sleep and reaching a minimum at 4:00 or 5:00 AM,” according to a 1997 study conducted by New York Hospital , Cornell Medical Center.

 

"Two hours before bed, soak in the tub for 20-30 minutes", recommends Joyce Walsleben, PhD, associate professor at New York University School of Medicine. “If you raise your body temperature a degree or two with a bath, the steeper drop at bedtime is more likely to put you in a deep sleep,” she says.

 

Sleep is essential for healthy brain function and physical health so it's understandable that when we don't get enough, we don't feel great. But did you know that a soak in a hot tub before bed can lead to a deeper and more peaceful sleep?

 

If you do struggle to drop off at night, enjoying a 15 minute relax in the hot tub about 90 minutes before you go to bed will calm you down and indicate to your body that it is almost bedtime.

 

Often, daily stressors and worry is what keeps us awake at night.  Hot tubs aid relaxation and the more relaxed you feel before getting in to bed, the more likely you are to sleep well.  When you put your tense body in a tub of hot water, the heat raises your body temperature and relaxes your muscles. This makes you feel drowsy and you should fall asleep more easily.

 

Another reason for disturbed sleep can be physical pain. If you suffer from muscle or joint pain for example, you may find it difficult to get comfortable or find certain positions painful.  Hydrotherapy is proven to help certain physical conditions such as arthritis so if your body aches less, this can also improve how you sleep. 

 

Of course, not everyone is the same and people will have different reasons for not being able to sleep.  If you do suffer from frequent insomnia, it may be worthwhile speaking to your Doctor, but every little helps and if using a hot tub means you can avoid prescription medication, it's worth a try.
